Media Interview Advisory Not All Toys Are Alike, Say Play Experts

What: Counselors, psychologists, and social workers who specialize in play therapy are giving tips on what gifts to buy children this holiday season. Experts from the Association for Play Therapy (A4PT), recommend giving gifts that involve interaction with others, encourage children to make their own decisions and rules, and excite children. Some specific examples are dolls, action figures, stuff animals, games that require two or more players, dress up, balls, bats, playground equipment, and puzzles.

Why: Children will receive long-term benefits from toys that promote physical play and interaction with others. Play is essential for communicative and social growth. Buying children toys that they can play with will promote creativity, self expression, decision making skills, and self-esteem.
